The first free practice session revealed Augusto Farfus to be the fastest of the field once again. The Brazilian’s time of 2:10.393 was 0.173 of a second better than that of Alain Menu and 0.218 quicker than local driver Tiago Monteiro’s best lap. Robert Huff was fourth fastest followed by Alessandro Zanardi, Gabriele Tarquini, Jörg Müller and Andy Priaulx.
The session was red flagged after nine minutes as an advertising banner fell onto the track. James Thompson looked to be making progress in his LADA Priora by improving his times mid-way into the session. However, the Briton suffered fuel pressure problems which stopped him getting closer to the pace – his best time was 23rd overall. Fellow LADA Sport driver Japp Van Lagen had problems with his gearbox. The Dutchman got stuck in neutral while taking a corner and consequently the car went sideways and hit the wall.
Stefano D’Aste set the fastest lap of the Independent competitors (2:11.505) which placed him a solid tenth overall, one tenth faster than Tom Coronel.
