Yokohama Trophy competitors took the lion’s share Sunday, in Suzuka’s Race 2. Wiechers-Sport’s Stefano D’Aste and Tuenti Racing Team’s Pepe Oriola finished first and second overall, beating GabrieleTarquini and the invincible Chevrolet trio.
However, their exploits were not the only ones performed by independent drivers, as Alex MacDowall completed a brilliant weekend with a fifth position overall in the first race, that was worth victory in the trophy.
“I was really happy to win again. We had really good pace this weekend, like we have had at the last circuits we visited, and we were very close to the works Chevrolet cars in qualifying and with race pace. It was just frustrating that in Race 2 I couldn’t overtake, so I ended up losing what I had gained in the championship in the first race,” said MacDowall.
With point leader Norbert Michelisz having a bad weekend, the fight for the Yokohama Trophy title is closer than ever. Oriola reduced the gap to ten points only, but with 66 points still at stake D’Aste and MacDowall remain in contention as they lie 35 and 41 points behind Michelisz.
“It was a really good day for me. My car was great, as the team and SEAT did a very good job. I’m sorry for Norbert (Michelisz); he had an unlucky weekend as I have had in the two previous events. Now the gap is closer and I think we will have an exciting fight for the title until the end,” Oriola commented.
